Centre for Effective Altruism

Centre for Effective Altruism

(2009; Oxford, UK; 20 staff; centreforeffectivealtruism.org)

Seeks to create a global community of people who have made helping others a core part of their lives and who use evidence and scientific reasoning to figure out how to do so as effectively as possible.  Making advancement of wellbeing a worldwide intellectual project could do for the pursuit of good what the Scientific Revolution did for the pursuit of truth – recognizing how difficult it is to know how to do the most good.  Therefore, the Centre tries to avoid overconfidence, to seek out informed critiques of their views, to be open to unusual ideas, and to take alternative points of view seriously.  Will MacAskill, Board President and Chair, and an associate professor of philosophy at Oxford University, was the youngest associate professor of philosophy in the world when he joined the faculty.
