It is dedicated to ocean research, exploration, and education, operating six research departments and more than 40 centres and labs. WHOI is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education and offers Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in partnership with MIT. It also provides postdoctoral, undergraduate, summer, and guest student programs. In addition to its research and educational efforts, WHOI operates various underwater vehicles, including the human-occupied submersible Alvin, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason/Medea, and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry.
