It acts as an open-access online tool to track global fishing apparent activity in near-real time and provides the world’s first global view of commercial fishing, aiming to advance ocean governance by envisioning “Sustainability through transparency”. It uses public broadcast data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) collected by satellite and terrestrial receivers to make these map visualizations, data, and analysis tools. It is a partnership between Oceana, SkyTruth, and Google.
