This prize was founded by Prince William and Kate Middleton for “A decade of action to repair the Earth,” its name an analogue for the “moonshot” goal: On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced his goal of putting a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
Starting this year (2020) the Earthshot Prize will announce the first challenges at environmental events around the world, in the areas of climate and energy, nature and biodiversity, oceans, air pollution and fresh water.
The Earthshot Prize will announce 50 winners: five per year, 2021-2030. The hope is to provide at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest problems by 2030. An annual awards ceremony will take place in different cities across the world each year between 2021 and 2030.
