It is “dedicated to a safe, fair and sustainable mining and metals industry”, gathering “28 mining and metals companies and over 35 regional and commodity associations” to strengthen environmental and social performance. It emerged from two-year process of research and consultation known as the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). and led to the signing of the Toronto Declaration, where it was agreed that ICMM should take over responsibilities for mainstreaming sustainable development for the industry.
