An annual meeting of grass-roots civil society organizations, first held in Brazil, which seeks to develop an alternative future through the championing of counter-hegemonic globalization. It was founded as an alternative and a challenge to the World Economic Forum in Davos, and emphasizes grass-roots activism. Its official actions are often paralleled by unofficial activist actions.
