Sustainable Solutions Lab (2010; UMass Boston; 3 staff; umb.edu/ssl)
A collaboration of four schools within UMass Boston: The College of Liberal Arts, College of Management, Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, and School for the Environment that is preparing Massachusetts coastal communities for a safer, more productive, and healthy future. Boston is uniquely vulnerable to the greatest global threats of the 21st century. The Brookings Institution rated Boston the most economically unequal city in the country, and the World Bank ranked Boston the 6th most vulnerable US city to flood damage caused by storms and sea level rise. Without coordinated action, existing stresses faced by low-income communities will be dramatically intensified by crippling heat, stronger storms, rising seas, and disrupted food production. SSL was created to address these issues on a local, state, national, and global scale.
