Greenpeace International (1972; Amsterdam; 2500+ staff; greenpeace.org)

The best-known environmental activist group in the world, bases its work on the belief that the “fragile earth deserves a voice. It needs solutions. It needs change. It needs action.” They work towards a “green peaceful future” and believe that courageous non-violent activism is the way to achieve it.  In 2017 47,000 volunteers supported them worldwide, and they amounted 13 million petition signatures. Their offices span 39 countries.

Programs:

  • Energy – Works to “challenge the power of fossil fuel corporations, bolster support for renewable and citizen-powered energy and seek to hold big polluters to account.”
  • Nature -Focuses on great global forests and oceans and aims “to preserve, protect and restore the most valuable ecosystems for the climate and for biodiversity.”
  • People – Aims “to tear apart the way corporations and governments collude to make a profit at the expense of both people and planet.”
  • Our ships – “For nearly 50 years, Greenpeace has been sailing the world’s oceans protecting our planet and fighting for environmental justice.”

  • HIGHLIGHTS: 30×30: A Blueprint for Ocean Protection (April 2019, 49p; summary 16p) –  “This ocean sanctuaries scientific study maps out how to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, a target that scientists say is crucial in order to safeguard wildlife and to help mitigate the impacts of climate change. 30×30: A Blueprint For Ocean Protection is the result of a year-long collaboration between leading academics at the University of York, University of Oxford and Greenpeace.”
