COVID-19: A Global Perspective. 2020 Goalkeepers Report

COVID-19: A Global Perspective.  2020 Goalkeepers Report (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Sept 2020, 45p).

Goalkeepers focuses on progress toward the SDGs, especially goals 1-6 on poverty, hunger, and good health.  COVID-19 has reinforced the fact that everyone needs to do their part: governments, the private sector, civil society, and the general public.  The Report assesses the damage that the pandemic has done and is still doing, arguing for a collaborative response: “There is no such thing as a national solution to a global crisis.”
The Report describes “mutually exacerbating catastrophes” resulting from the pandemic.  As regards vaccine coverage, a good proxy for how health systems are functioning, “we’ve been set back about 25 years in about 25 weeks.”  The catastrophes continue to pile up, as global supply chains shut down, schools close (with girls less likely to return), many people skipping meals, and inequality widening.  Half of the Report is devoted to charts showing Better, Worse, and Reference scenarios for the 1990-2030 period, regarding poverty, malnutrition, under 5 and maternal mortality, HIV, TB, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, universal health coverage, sanitation, and vaccines.
