Advocates for the approximately 70.8 million people are currently displaced by war, conflict, and persecution and the many millions more displaced by climate events.

Programs:

  • Labor Market Access: The vast majority of refugees and forced migrants in developing host nations today do not have the right to work in host countries. Partners with the Center for Global Development to to expand labor market access for refugees and forced migrants around the world.  Example of an analytical report: “Deportations and Lack of Legal Work for Refugees in Turkey.”
  • Women and Girls: Women and girls face greater risks of gender-based violence (GBV), other forms of sexual assault, domestic violence, trafficking, and early or forced marriage.  Example: more than 4 million Venezuelans have fled the economic and political chaos. Refugee International’s response: a report, “Confronting Sexual Exploitation and Trafficking of Venezuelan Women and Girls.”
  • Climate Displacement:  People who lose their homes as a result of climate disasters are not considered “refugees” because the 1951 Refugee Convention only protects those fleeing war and persecution.  Response report: “Inadequate Investments in Durable Solutions for Drought Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS) in Ethiopia
