It promotes socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities as mandated by the UN General Assembly. It is responsible for all urbanization, and human settlement matters within the UN system. Together with its partners, it works to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities. It believes urbanization can be a positive transformative force for people and communities and has the potential to reduce inequality, discrimination, and poverty.
