The legally binding international agreement links the environment and development to sustainable land management. It is one of the three so-called “Rio conventions” that sprang from the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. The other two Rio conventions are the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). The Convention to Combat Desertification is a global mechanism, which offers advisory services to developing countries and integrated financing strategies to increase investment in sustainable land management.
