The founder, Ali Soufan, a Lebanese-American who served in the FBI, received the Kennedy Award for meritorious public service in 2018. Soufan is the author of the newly released Anatomy of Terror: From the Death of bin Laden to the Rise of the Islamic State.  His New York Times Top 10 Bestseller, The Black Banners: The Inside Story of 9/11 and the War Against al Qaeda was recognized with the Ridenhour Book Prize in 2012.
