It works to “better understand our natural world and help protect its precious resources extends beyond national borders to monitor global weather and climate, and work with partners around the world.” This is so that they can “predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts; share that knowledge and information with others; conserve and manage coastal and marine ecosystems and resources.”

Focus areas:

  1. The National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas
  2. The National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) provides comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data
  3. National Ocean Service addresses oceanic and coastal transportation and commerce, coastal preparedness, recreation, stewardship and tourism
