A research partnership centered at the Transportation Research and Education Center (TREC) of Portland State University (See Transportation Research and Education Center). Includes the University of Oregon, Oregon Institute of Technology, University of Utah, and new partners University of Arizona and University of Texas at Arlington. Dozens of partners, including universities, utilities, governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations have supported NITC projects with cash matches or in-kind assistance.  Grounded on the following proposition: “Urban populations and income inequality are both increasing. Transportation is the second-largest household expense. Demographic shifts, along with efforts to address climate change and other policy challenges, are contributing to the demand for multimodal solutions. Rapid advances in technology and shared mobility have the potential to address these challenges, yet they also pose new ones in implementation and equity.”

Focus areas:

  • Increased access to multi-modal opportunities
  • Improving multi-modal planning and shared use of infrastructure
  • Advancing innovation and Smart Cities
  • Developing data, models, and tools

Research

  • Approximately 350 research projects completed, e.g., “Understanding the Mobility Impacts of Decentralizing Homeless Services in Salt Lake County, Utah”

Publications

  • Approximately 300 final reports on a variety of topics, e.g., “Bicycle Planning GIS Tool” (March 2019)
