Crop Trust

Founding Year: 2004

Stefan Schmitz (Executive Director)

It was established by Biodiversity International on behalf of the CGIAR and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to help support this global system in a sustainable way. Their Crop Diversity Endowment Fund provides long-term grants to safeguard collections of unique and valuable crop diversity held in gene banks around the world. It also implements “projects to address gaps in the global system for the conservation of crop diversity.” We support the “ultimate fail safe for these and other collections in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, backing up seeds from almost every country in the Arctic permafrost against an uncertain future.”
