Builds on existing programs of research and education in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT, in order to better understand the natural mechanisms underlying the ocean, atmosphere and land systems that together control the Earth’s climate. CGCS combines theory with observations and computer models by undertaking large interdisciplinary initiatives in order to better understand, predict, and respond to environmental changes especially over the next century. The Center places a high priority on conveying its findings to a broad range of audiences through many channels, including talks and presentations, educational classes and events, and news outlets.
- Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change: provides an integrative assessment of the impacts of climate change and the expected values of responsive actions
- Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE): measures the composition of the global atmosphere from high-frequency measurements obtained from a network of sampling stations across the globe.
- Climate Modeling Initiative: developed a modeling infrastructure for the study of the atmosphere, ocean and climate of the Earth
