The institute was founded to advance the study and use of strategic nonviolent action in conflicts and share these learnings through workshops, conferences, and the media. It was founded by the Gene Sharp, a renowned writer on nonviolent struggle and three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Sharp’s book, From Dictatorship to Democracy, has been published into over 34 languages.
